Business organization needs consistencies into their working where they can objectively evaluate the performance and determine the state of proper working. The work depends on the competency level of the worker.

The working employs a blend of means, modes, methods, mechanisms, tactics, tools, techniques and levers to get the best outputs from a given set of inputs. The science of optimizing the output from the inputs that is doing the thing on the right way is termed as efficiency. Not far off but having its firm footing on the ground is effectiveness which is about getting the right thing done.

The efficiency is about the optimized output that is minimizing the input resources whereas effectiveness is about enhancing the outcomes that maximizing the results. The working is about productivity which means the quantity of work produced any individual or team given a set of resources. There are grey areas between the use of term productivity and efficiency.

Productivity simple put is output per unit of time. Efficiency is best possible output in that given amount of time. We cannot keep creativity out of picture when we are envisioning the productivity of business organization. There is an art and science to management. The science is in measuring these parameters and art is managing these parameters for optimizing the business performance. The performance of business is not only contingent on efficiency but also on effectiveness, so also not only on productivity but on creativity as well.  

There is a rapid shift taking place in the business environment. Organizations cannot operate only in the productivity mode to perform they have to keep shifting gears and more often than not have to get into creativity mode of working to reform their fundamental ways of working. Simply put new ways of doing things are termed as innovation. With new methods and tools constantly knocking the door, the organization needs to be more vigilant and keep watching through the windows when to open and when to stay closed.

Innovation has become the new order of working and no organization can escape the dictate of new mode of working. The working has to undergo change with changing times and in the given circumstances time is changing rapidly. The time cannot be delinked from space; hence we have the space-time continuum.  

Einstein’s theory of special relativity created a fundamental link between space and time. Until than ‘time’ was viewed independent of ‘space’, it was considered as a separate one-dimensional continuum. Similarly, we cannot delink between productivity and creativity, there has to be a continuum. We need to craft that grid of connectivity.

The question is not of how to balance rather the question to be asked is how to harmonize the relationship between the working of productivity and creativity. This is in order to optimize the delivery of business performance.

In other words, productivity can be termed as exploitation of resources whereas creativity can be termed as exploration of new resources for doing things better and constantly bettering the ways of doing. Ultimately what matters is how we do those things; more importantly does it differently not always do different things and make all the difference in our working.

It boils down to the question of practice to perform. How to institutionalize practice into the workings of organization in a more systematic way? Is there a framework to work the practice to become the best practice and keep searching for new ways of staying ahead of the curve by discovering or designing the next set of practices?
