Data Centers Map: 21 Maps of AI Campuses, Grids and Moratoriums

AI data center trackers for Michigan, France, Scotland and New Mexico, diesel generators in Georgia, Berlin's grid, Google in 2013 and CERN's machine room.

Updated

The newest data center maps track the AI build-out site by site, and many of them record what happened next as well as where. Of the 34 projects on one Michigan tracker, 19 are paused, stalled or withdrawn; a Minnesota map lists 32 local moratoriums, nearly all passed in 2026. Residents, reporters and campaign groups keep these maps. Older ones look at what is already standing: Google’s network in 2013, telephone exchanges in Philadelphia turned carrier hotels, and the machine room at CERN.

  1. France Data Center Map: Projects, Opposition and Court Cases

The collective Le Nuage était sous nos pieds sorts France’s data centers by how far along they are: existing sites from OpenStreetMap, then projects under construction, approved, or only announced in the press. At Alixan, beside the Valence TGV station, Sesterce plans 80 MW on a campus meant to reach 1 GW with 40,000 GPUs; its building permit was granted, then suspended by the administrative court in Grenoble after a challenge by a local collective. Another layer holds the “turnkey” sites the state offers developers, among them a 77-hectare coal plant at Gardanne and the aerodrome of Aix-Les Milles. The 34 opposition entries name the groups behind each campaign, from Wissous Notre Ville, whose case against an Amazon project is before the court in Versailles, to residents’ groups in Lille, Grenoble and Marseille.

  2. Michigan AI Data Center Map: 34 Projects and Their Fate

Each of the 34 pins gets a short report, and 19 of them sit in the layer “Paused, stalled, or withdrawn”. “Stargate” in Saline Township is under construction: a $43 billion campus of OpenAI, Oracle and Related Digital on 700 acres, approved to draw up to 1.4 gigawatts. Google’s “Project Cannoli” in Van Buren Township could use up to 3.6 million gallons of water a day. In Augusta Township voters rejected the rezoning on 4 August with nearly 90% against, and Lansing’s council was about to vote when Deep Green withdrew its 24 MW plan just before a council vote it was likely to lose.

  3. World Data Centers Map: 4,453 Sites in 116 Countries

Lunalune’s world map sorts 4,453 data centers into functional, under construction and proposed, across 116 countries from Iceland to New Zealand. Most functional sites are simply dots; the building sites carry names, such as AWS IAD-500 and IAD-501 in Virginia, Equinix LD12 near London, M23 and M24 on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula, three Microsoft centers around Quebec City and a data center going into the former thermal power plant of Montereau.

  4. Georgia Data Center Map: Counting the Diesel Generators

Every one of these 29 Georgia data centers is listed by its backup power: the total number of diesel generators in its permit, with the date the final permit was issued. QTS Fayetteville I has 572, Amazon’s ATL089 in Covington 321, Stream Data Centers in Winston 315, and a small Core Scientific site in Dalton 7. Where the count was not public, the map says “Undisclosed”, as it does for both of Switch’s “Keep” campuses.

  5. Scotland Data Centre Map: 1 GW Plans on Farms and Pit Sites

Compiled with Action to Protect Rural Scotland, the map gives each proposal its megawatts and the ground it would take. Ravenscraig, on the former steelworks near Motherwell, would need 550 MW, “the same energy demand as more than half a million homes”. At Drumshangie the site includes the memorial of the Stanrigg pit disaster; at Chapelcross a 1 GW scheme sits just north of the old nuclear site; and Blackdog, north of Aberdeen, would start at 600 MW on a former MOD firing range at the edge of the dunes. Several entries note whether an Environmental Impact Assessment is required.

  6. Philadelphia Internet Map: Carrier Hotels in Old Landmarks

The internet in Philadelphia lives in buildings meant for something else. 401 N Broad, the 14-story Art Deco Terminal Commerce Building that the Reading Company built in 1929 to 1931, became the city’s largest carrier hotel, with over 80 carriers by 2015. At 8 and 9 Preston Street, Bell and Keystone built their exchanges across the street from each other, so fierce was the competition between the two. Verizon’s central offices follow by their old exchange names, “Dewey”, “Poplar”, “Pennypacker” and “Evergreen”, beside the steam plants and the Western Union building of 1923.

  7. New Mexico Data Center Map: Gigawatts in the Desert

Ten projects and four county moratoriums, with the numbers each developer has put out. In Lea County, New Era Energy & Digital took an option on 3,500 acres for 7 GW of gas generation and a planned nuclear plant of 5 GW or more. South of Santa Teresa, Project Jupiter of BorderPlex, Stack, Oracle and OpenAI would run on 41 natural gas turbines built on site. A solar data center is proposed at Spaceport America, and the Sierra County moratorium links to the report of residents protesting it.

  8. Berlin Data Center Map: Megawatts, Grid and Waste Heat

RZinBB maps Berlin’s data centers by megawatts, from Vodafone’s 1.2 MW node to the 244 MW extension of Vantage’s campus, and in the planned layer the old Klingenberg power station and the Berliner Zeitung print works reappear as data centers. Behind them lie the grid’s limits: the high-voltage supply areas carry their free capacity, and three of the seven show 0 MVA. Waste-heat sites from Berlin’s 2026 heat plan complete the picture, each marked with whether its heat is available, planned or restricted.

  9. UK Data Centre Map: Megawatts, Racks and Constituencies

Each proposed UK site has its developer, floor area, IT power and rack capacity, and the map lays them over local authority and parliamentary constituency boundaries, so anyone can see what is planned in their seat. Among them is Digital Reef’s 600 MW campus at North Ockendon with room for 100,000 racks. Microsoft’s Eggborough plan reuses a power station site; in Watford one is “proposed on a car boot field”.

  10. Google Data Center Map 2013: The Whole Network at One Moment

Google’s infrastructure as it stood in October 2013: its large data centres with the years they were announced and opened, its server locations, and its public and private peering points, each with an address and, for exchanges, an IP range. The Dalles in Oregon opened in 2006, Douglas County in Georgia in 2003, and Singapore and Taiwan are still marked as not yet operational. The map also draws the Unity and South-East Asia Japan submarine cables.

  11. Data Center Moratorium Map: Minnesota's 32 Pauses

CUREminnesota pins every Minnesota city and county that has paused data center applications, each with the date it passed and a link to the moratorium’s text. The dates run from Freeborn County in August 2025 through Minneapolis, Mankato and Thief River Falls in 2026. A second layer lists nine ordinances, the oldest Bloomington’s of 2022, a response to noise from a Verizon data center.

  12. CERN Data Centre Tour: 90,000 Cores in Three Rooms

A virtual walk through the computer centre of the lab where the World Wide Web was invented. The 18 stops explain what you would see: 10,000 servers running 24/7, an operator’s room staffed every hour of the year, around 120 PB of raw disk space, and blue ducts that carry cold air under the false floor. The centre sits at the heart of a grid of more than 160 data centres worldwide, and its power was raised from 2.9 to 3.5 MW in early 2013.

  14. Data Center Heat Reuse Map: 83 Projects Warming Cities

71 operational and 12 planned projects where a data center’s waste heat goes somewhere useful, each linked to its own data sheet and a source. Stockholm’s Conapto centers, Yandex in Finland, Telehouse in London’s Docklands and Amazon’s offices in Seattle are among them, as is Agriport in the Netherlands with Microsoft and Google. The supercomputer LUMI and Meta’s Odense campus show it at large scale.

  17. Plaine Commune Data Center Walk: Paris's Server District

A guided walk through La Plaine Saint-Denis, the district north of Paris that the map calls Europe’s capital of data centers. The stops explain why the buildings are here, what a data center is, with the move of the Paris stock exchange and Netflix as examples, and how one rose on the old site of the Nouvelles Messageries de la Presse Parisienne. One stop is about the local mobilisations: electrical saturation, tax changes and lawsuits, notably against a data center in Aubervilliers. Equinix, Interxion and Orange buildings are drawn as outlines.

  18. Hillsboro Data Center Map: Who Got Which Tax Break

Hillsboro, Oregon, signed its Enterprise Zone deals for data centers in spring 2026, and this map files them by address with dates, exemption years and abatement per job. Digital Realty’s “AI GPU Cloud Refresh” at 5870 NE Schaaf St is noted for an “extremely high abatement-to-job ratio” of $726,598. NTT signed four contracts for its HIL11 campus on the same day, staggered so that the exemptions run until 2047.

  19. Minnesota Data Center Map: How Much Water Each Would Use

The companion to CUREminnesota’s moratorium map gives each proposed hyperscale data center its size, peak electricity and water use, taken from planning documents. Amazon’s abandoned Becker plan would have needed at least 600 MW and up to 1.8 billion gallons of water a year, by unconfirmed estimates of the state’s natural resources department. In Monticello the figure is 250 to 300 million gallons a year; Google promises air cooling at Pine Island and 1,900 MW of new renewables.

  20. Physical Internet Map: Where the Cloud Touches Ground

Thirteen places where the internet becomes physical: the AT&T earth station at Salt Creek relaying traffic to Asia, the NSA’s Utah Data Center, the AT&T office in San Francisco “where NSA’s Stellar Wind internet skimming was first discovered”, and the room at UCLA from which Leonard Kleinrock sent the first message to SRI on 29 October 1969. The last two pins are a closed Blockbuster and a closed Hollywood Video in Grand Forks.
