What MapIndex is
MapIndex is a search engine for maps made by people, on Google My Maps and uMap. Such maps hold a wealth of local knowledge, from cycling routes to the best public fountains, yet once shared by link they are hard to find again. MapIndex makes them searchable.
Where the maps come from
MapIndex finds links to maps in public sources on the web, and visitors can submit maps themselves. It hosts no maps: every result leads to the map on its provider’s site.
MapIndex revisits every map regularly to make sure it is still online and its details are up to date. Maps that are no longer public disappear from MapIndex.
AI content
Many maps are written in other languages or carry a name that only means something to their author. So MapIndex uses AI to write an English title and summary for them. AI content is always labelled as such, and the author’s original text is always one click away.
Removing a map
If you find your map on MapIndex and would rather not have it listed, write to [email protected] and it will be removed.
Who is behind it
MapIndex is an independent project by Moritz, a hobby developer from Berlin. It is not affiliated with Google, uMap or any other company.
