Mafia Map: 21 Maps of Mob Turf, Clans and Speakeasies

Chicago Outfit turf, the Five Families, Cosa Nostra's mandamenti, councils Italy dissolved, confiscated villas, 918 Prohibition raids and the Krays' East End.

Updated

Search MapIndex for mafia and 316 maps come back, many of them about the party game or today’s street gangs. The rest split along the Atlantic. Italians map the mafia as a structure, family by family and town by town, citing the half-yearly reports of the state’s anti-mafia investigators, and then map what the state does back: 336 councils and health authorities dissolved, 487 confiscated flats, shops and villas in Sicily. Americans map addresses: the candy store where Murder Inc. waited for contracts, the house where a Brooklyn boss crashed his car in 1928, 918 Prohibition raids taken from Buffalo’s newspapers.

  1. Chicago Mob Map: Outfit Turf and Rival Gangs, 1890–1995

Every territory on this map carries its flags: Irish for the Valley Gang and Ragen’s Colts, which started as a baseball team, Irish and Polish for the Saltis-McErlane Gang, whose Back of the Yards was later taken by Capone. One by one the notes end the same way, with each gang absorbed by the Chicago Outfit and “extinct”. A layer of historical slums begins the story: Little Hell, the shanty town named after the gas flames of the People’s Gas, Light & Coke Company and torn down in the 1950s for Cabrini-Green, and the Levee, where brothels and gambling dens lined State Street. Among 150 objects, the Hawthorne Hotel in Cicero recalls the day the North Side Gang fired more than 1,000 shots into it, the Blackstone Hotel the first convention of Luciano’s National Crime Syndicate in 1931, and a “Dead Man’s Tree” the carved names of future victims, though the author is “not sure if this is the exact tree”.

  2. Cosa Nostra Map: Mandamenti and Families of Sicily

Cosa Nostra is organised by territory, and this map draws its grid: 57 points, each a mandamento with the families inside it, from Boccadifalco and Pagliarelli in Palermo to Corleone, whose mandamento takes in Prizzi, Marineo and Lercara Friddi. Every entry cites its source, usually the 2012 half-year report of the Direzione Investigativa Antimafia, along with books such as Cosa Nostra. Uomini d’onore. The east of the island breaks the pattern: Catania is mapped as clans rather than mandamenti, and the Stidda of Gela and Niscemi gets a point of its own. A last pin links to the author’s larger project, “La mappa della mafia in Italia e nel mondo”.

  3. Five Families Map: New York Mafia Turf After Prohibition

Joseph “Socks” Lanza controlled the Fulton Fish Market from 1923 to 1968, “over two thirds of his life”. This map splits New York among the Five Families, one layer each, and every crew’s polygon tells who held it and when: Luciano ran the Manhattan waterfront until his deportation in 1946, and in 1972 the Gambinos’ East New York crew moved to Ozone Park to be closer to JFK Airport. The 1963 crews of the Lower East Side come from an FBI file the author links. The author is candid about the gaps: the 116th Street crew “probably had operations all over Italian Harlem”, but got only its own streets so both areas can be clicked, and one Borough Park polygon begins “I’m going to be honest, I’m not sure”.

  4. Mafia Infiltration Map: 336 Italian Councils Dissolved

When a town council falls under mafia influence, Italy’s government can dissolve it and send in commissioners, and this map places 336 councils, provinces and health authorities that went through it. Arzano near Naples was dissolved in 2008, 2015 and 2019; San Ferdinando in Calabria in 1992, 2009 and 2014; Poggiomarino in 1991, 1999 and again in 2025. Each entry gives the dates and the population, from Bompensiere in Sicily with 558 people to Reggio Calabria with 182,551, dissolved in 2012. The north is on it too: Brescello in Emilia-Romagna in 2016 and Saint-Pierre in the Aosta Valley in 2020, while Aosta itself was investigated and the case archived.

  5. Speakeasy Map: 343 Pittsburgh Bars of Prohibition

The Monaco Club, “the Swankiest of Pittsburgh Speakeasies”, stood directly across the street from the Oakland police station. This map holds 343 speakeasies and leaves out licensed saloons without compelling evidence, so each entry carries its raids from the newspapers of the day. At the Kozel Inn the owner pushed a bell to a dumbwaiter, and before the agents reached the second-floor kitchen the dishwasher had emptied half the contents of a teapot; at the Stag Hotel agents found 150 gallons of moonshine under loose floorboards. A layer finds the ones that are bars again today, and the Tito family’s bootlegging garage became the distribution centre of Rolling Rock beer.

  6. Mafia Export Map: Italian Clans Around the World

Families from Cinisi, Partinico, Salemi and Mazara del Vallo turn up in Namibia, a Camorra clan on Tenerife, Palermo’s families in Angola. Started in 2009 and built mostly from the book Mafia export, this map follows Italy’s mafias country by country, with the Calabrian 'ndrine listed at length for Colombia and Venezuela. It also works as the hub of its author’s project: one pin per region links to a map of its own, from Lombardy and Piedmont to the “basilischi” of Basilicata, and others reach out to the triads, Bulgaria and South Korea’s kkangpae.

  7. Brooklyn Mob Tour: From Murder Inc. to Frankie Yale

In the back room of Midnight Rose’s candy store on Saratoga Avenue, the hitmen of Murder Inc. played cards while they waited for their next contract. This driving tour runs from Green-Wood Cemetery, where Johnny Torrio lies, to the house on 44th Street whose front steps Frankie Yale hit with his car on 1 June 1928, chased by four men in the first use of a machine gun on a New York gangster; the same gun, a note says, was used on St. Valentine’s Day in Chicago the next year. Torrio himself came back to Brooklyn, died of a heart attack in a barber’s chair, and weeks passed before the New York press noticed. Along the way: the church where Capone married Mae Coughlin in 1918, and the 1956 Profaci-Bonanno wedding that became a book and a film.

  8. Confiscated Mafia Assets Map: 487 Properties in Sicily

What happens to a mafioso’s flat once the state takes it? This map sorts 487 confiscated properties in Sicily by who got them: the Carabinieri, the Guardia di Finanza, the police, ministries, the municipality for social purposes, and a layer “in vendita” for sale. The entries read like a land register: a flat in a condominium, a garage, an agricultural plot, a villa in Militello handed to the town by council resolution, a rooftop complex of 6,815 square metres at Contrada Pozzo Bollente. At Villaggio Salice, the Bar Spartà at Villaggio Salice now belongs to the city for social use; another layer lists the assets for which the national agency names no recipient at all.

  9. Prohibition Raids Map: 918 Busts in Buffalo and Erie County

In April 1920 young boys found a still behind a barn on Adams Street in Buffalo and reported it, one entry in this register of 918 Prohibition raids in Erie County, New York, from 1920 to 1923. Every entry is typed in the same form: the place, the date, the bootleggers, the agents, the agency and the newspaper page, and the layers sort them by where the drink was found: houses, hotels, saloons, restaurants, garages, barns, drugstores and factories, among them a luggage maker. Drugstores were raided for fraudulent prescriptions, and some hotels again and again, one of them at its own manager’s request to stop his employees selling.

  10. 'Ndrangheta Map: Clan Territories of Calabria

Where the Sicilian maps put a point, this one draws borders: 61 polygons, one per 'ndrina, across Calabria. San Luca is marked as the “Mecca of the mafia”, where 'Ndrangheta leaders from all over the world meet. The notes stay honest about what one person can know: Lamezia Terme has “at least 4 different Ndrina” and “im not sure of their borders”, Cosenza at least five, and Cassano allo Ionio and Cutro are each shared by two families. One 'ndrina is said to work illegally in fish and tourism.

  11. Cleveland Mob War Map: Danny Greene and the Car Bombs

On the evening of 29 March 1975 a car bomb killed Shondor Birns as he left Christy’s Lounge, while Catholic parishioners gathered nearby for early Easter mass at St. Malachi. This map follows Danny Greene through Cleveland in 14 stops, from the docks where he became a longshoreman in 1957 and the union hiring hall he ran from 1961, to the bombs of the city’s mob war: one tossed into his car in 1968, one in his home and office in 1975, one in a plastic flower pot on a rival’s lawn. Greene’s luck ran out on 6 October 1977, when a car bomb killed him as he left his dentist’s office in Lyndhurst.

  12. Mafia Victims Memorial Map: 6,792 Streets Named in Italy

Italy names its streets after the people the mafia killed, and this map collects them from OpenStreetMap, 6,792 streets and squares last updated in December 2020. Via Giovanni Falcone and Via Paolo Borsellino come up hundreds of times each, after the two Palermo judges, and they reach far beyond Sicily, into Lombardy, Veneto and Piedmont. Some towns name no one and everyone: Via Vittime della Mafia, Piazza Vittime della Mafia, or a Piazzale Giovanni Falcone, Paolo Borsellino e Vittime della Mafia. The author notes that the entries may need checking.

  13. Kray Twins Map: The East End of Ronnie and Reggie

In 1952 the Kray twins were among the last prisoners held at the Tower of London, after failing to report for national service. This map of 23 places keeps the real sites apart from the film locations of LEGEND: the Carpenter’s Arms on Cheshire Street, bought in 1967 as a gift for their mother Violet and now serving escargots, the Repton boxing club where they trained, the Blind Beggar, where they killed George Cornell, now with “posh hot dogs” and a water feature. Esmeralda’s Barn, their Knightsbridge nightclub from 1960 to 1963, is now the Berkeley Hotel, and Bow Street Magistrates’ Court, where they stood among defendants from Casanova to Oscar Wilde, closed in 2006.

  14. Camorra Map: Clans of Naples, Quarter by Quarter

Naples divides into clans street by street, and this map, begun in 2009, goes through the city quarter by quarter: the Quartieri Spagnoli, Rione Sanità, Secondigliano and Scampia, Posillipo, each with the clans the sources name there. Then it spreads into the province and beyond, to Ercolano, Pompeii and Torre Annunziata on the slopes of Vesuvius and to the Casalesi cartel around Casal di Principe and Castel Volturno. The 55 entries cite a 2011 history of the Camorra and the 2012 anti-mafia report, often with a link to the clan’s Wikipedia page.

  15. Small-Town Prohibition Map: Moonshine in the Susquehanna Valley

State Police meant to raid 114 Upper Market Street in Milton, charged into number 116 by mistake and found 57 gallons of “raisin jack”, 25 of grape wine and a little whiskey. This map tells 16 such stories from central Pennsylvania in the 1920s. A constable waited two weeks before arresting a farmer so he could seed his winter wheat, someone slipped a railcar with 47 barrels of whiskey onto a siding at Sunbury hoping no one would notice, and a “whiskey while you wait” garage mixed bottles to order. On “Enforcement Sunday” the Women’s Christian Temperance Union raised money for enforcement in 72 Sunday schools; Snyder County’s quota was $140.

  16. Little Italy Mafia Walking Tour: Manhattan's Mob History

On 13 June 1983, a note says, the bosses of the Five Families met at Bari Restaurant Equipment, 240 Bowery, to divide up the city’s cement contracts. This walking tour of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, East Village and Little Italy reads like a guide’s notebook, with key facts in bullet points: the Mulberry Street Bar opened in 1908 as Mare Chiaro, the Spring Lounge kept two sharks in jars behind the counter, and the Old Police Headquarters had jail cells and a shooting range in its basement. At 80 Second Avenue, Joe Masseria dodged the bullets of an ambush in 1922 and hid in a store, “a miracle escape” to the newspapers.

  17. Yakuza Map: Japan's Crime Syndicates and Their Bases

Each of Japan’s major syndicates sits at the city it is based in: the Yamaguchi-gumi in Kobe, the Sumiyoshi-kai in Tokyo’s Akasaka with an estimated 10,000 members, the Inagawa-kai in the spa town of Atami with about 7,000. This map of 26 groups runs from the Kyokuryu-kai in Okinawa to the Soai-kai in Chiba, with notes like the one for the Toa-kai, whose membership is predominantly Korean Japanese. It draws on an Italian book about the world’s mafias, Divorati dalla mafia, and Wikipedia.

  18. John Dillinger Map: A Gangster's Life for the Classroom

On 3 March 1934 John Dillinger escaped from the Lake County Jail at Crown Point, Indiana, with a gun carved from wood and blackened with shoe polish. This map is a GoogleTrek for school: a stop “For Teachers” asks whether he was “a Robinhood-esque hero, or just a low-life thug?”, and another tells students where to start. The stops follow him from his birth outside Indianapolis in 1903 through prison, the bank in East Chicago and an apartment in St. Paul rented as Mr. and Mrs. Carl T. Hellman, to his death in Chicago in July 1934.

  19. Anti-Mafia Map Palermo: 19 Places of Remembrance

Palermo’s airport is the first stop, named Falcone-Borsellino after the two judges, and the walk goes on through the city that fought the mafia: the courthouse, the Ucciardone prison, the monument to those who fell in the fight against the mafia, a memorial tree outside Falcone’s home and another in Via d’Amelio. The 19 numbered stops, with notes in Polish, include murals of both judges, the Wall of Legality and the start of a “No mafia tour” at the Teatro Massimo. Outside the city they reach the memorial to the Capaci bombing and the “Casina NO MAFIA” nearby, then a house of remembrance in Cinisi.

  20. Hashish Smuggling Map: Lebanon to Hilton Head, 1985

Smugglers flew from Washington to London and on to Mallorca, where they picked up a 71-foot ketch called Second Life and spent several weeks equipping it. This map follows the 1985 run: across the Mediterranean, where the boom broke and cost several days, to Rhodes to wait for instructions, then to Jounieh near Beirut to load 30,000 pounds of hashish. After a stop in St. Martin the boat cruised off Hilton Head Island, and the hashish was finally offloaded somewhere in the back marshes of Daufuskie Island onto two sport-fishing boats, which carried it to an abandoned oyster factory on the mainland.

  21. Wildcat Brewery Map: Oshkosh's Basement Beer in Prohibition

Molly Molitor, sister of the Oshkosh bootlegger Butch Youngwirth, had a brewery in her basement that was never raided. This map finds 12 wildcat breweries of Prohibition Oshkosh, in basements, a saloon and an abandoned farm, with their raid dates: two on 24 August 1927, two more on Valentine’s Day 1930. Some were never raided and are placed on the memories of Youngwirth’s son Leroy and a former bootlegger, Ed “Slim” Suda, who described one brewery as near the corner of 6th and Iowa but never pinpointed the house.
